NSFWS: The Hedge Trimmer Incident

Was I avoiding cleaning the living room, or just wanting to spend some time in the breeze on the shady side of the house rather than inside where it was getting bloody hot? Hmmm… Maybe bloody isn’t the best adverb to use here…

Remember kids, don’t reach up when working with power tools; always get a stool if you need to work above your head. If you have a reflex-disengage switch, please shut down all those fine-honed reflexes that trigger when you drop something. Trust Uncle Chris, you don’t want your hand to fly out and catch a falling hedge trimmer so quickly the blades haven’t stopped moving yet…

I really wish the iPhone had a better camera. These pictures look like crap, and it isn’t the gory subject matter. Click on the pictures for larger versions, and comments:

It looked worse when the flaps were open…

It is still attached, really…

I would have done it differently…

UPDATE: Just for clarification, there was no bone, tendon, nerve or major vessel damage. My finger didn’t get cut off. I just cut through skin and more fat than I knew I had in my fingers. It was a very messy cut because the hedge trimmers are ‘dual-action’, cutting in both directions; and, since the doctor didn’t take my advice, to remove some of the subcutaneous fat so that it could be cleanly sutured, it is going to scar really bad.
